The Test of English Proficiency-- Feb 11, 2023, 10-3p ET (with independent work for a total of .6 CEUs)

The BEI Test of English Proficiency (TEP) is the first step in obtaining BEI certification.  During this workshop, we will discuss the history of the BEI exam, the types of questions that are on the TEP, test taking strategies for the TEP such as identifying roots and affixes of words, and how the BEI TEP measures an essential component of our every day work.

This workshop is designed to introduce you to the format, structure, types of questions, and general test taking strategies.  It will not teach you how to pass the test.  It will give you tools to reduce the anxiety and fear surrounding this test.

At the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Explain the 5 types of questions on the TEP.

  • Explain the rationale for those question types.

  • Identify 3 test-taking strategies for multiple choice tests

  • Assess their own English proficiency.

  • Identify areas in need of improvement prior to taking the TEP.

  • Locate at least 2 different online resources designed to improve test taking strategies and English proficiency.

The Performance Exam--Feb 18, 2023, 10-3p ET (with independent work for a total of .6 CEUs)

The BEI Basic exam is the first performance test many interpreters experience.  Wouldn’t it be nice to know what to expect in regards to format, structure, and scoring expectations?  This workshop is designed to expose interpreters to contrived testing environments and video assessments.  Participants will also have an opportunity to use rubrics to self assess recorded work and identify areas to emphasize during skill development activities.

At the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Explain the history of the BEI exam.

  • Identify the 4 domains that will be included on the test.

  • Explain the importance of rubrics to the rating process

  • Explain a “trigger” pass

  • Identify the differences between subjective scores and objective scores.

  • Assess an interpretation for errors as defined by the BEI exam

Workshops will be hosted on Zoom.
